Children become obese because of either genetic or environmental. Genetically they may be susceptible to gaining excess weight if there is a family history of being overweight and this can be one of the causes of childhood obesity. The environment in which they live will also affect this. If they are in a situation where they are regularly or have access to fast foods, sugar rich foods and drinks and make children exercise are more likely to be overweight or obese.

Causes Child Obesity

Children eating habits established itself at an early age by the impact parents or guidance, (even with the lack of it). It can be much easier and quicker for busy parents to order take-away rather than to prepare a meal and healthy food at home. This is not to say that taking -aways are a bad thing, but if they are eaten regularly the diet is balanced. Children quickly breed choice for this type of food, and the pattern will be set. Irregular meals, snacks more habit than from need and lack of regular exercise also helps to put in place inadequate eating habits.

The consequences of being overweight and obese.

The incidence of children becoming overweight or obese is increasing dangerously. Children in the 6-11 years age group are becoming overweight at a greater rate than any other age group.

Health problems usually with adults are now emerging in children and adolescents. Such problems as: –

– High blood pressure and cholesterol

– type 2 diabetes

– depression and low self-esteem

– asthma and sleep apnea

Since the problem of overweight can carry through to adulthood they will receive a reduced life expectancy 7-11 years.

What to do

It is not recommended to put overweight children on a diet to reduce weight, but to let them grow at a healthy weight

– They should encourage :. –

– Eat many different foods

– Eat enough for the operation and growth of

– Eat smaller meals and have plenty to drink (non-carbonated soft drinks)

– Allow entertainment regularly

– Get regular exercise

– set limits on activities such as video games and watching TV

The whole family should be involved so that overweight child is encouraged and guided by the family support. It will be good for families too!
