Obesity in children – Construction of good eating habits for a healthy lifestyle


It is not “cool” to be fat, but it does not prevent obesity epidemic occurring among American youth. Obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to 13 percent in 1994. Today it is 20 percent – and rising. Children spend excessive amounts of time watching television, using the computer and playing video games. To make matters worse, children are bombarded with well-crafted television advertising of fast-food chains and other purveyors of high-fat, high-sugar meals and snacks. A recent study showed that children aged two to six watching television are more likely to choose foods advertised on TV than children who do not watch such advertisements. These highly effective advertising campaigns, along with physically inactive lifestyle, have produced a generation of kids who are at high risk of obesity-related diseases.

The health threat is the early development of type II diabetes (adult onset), especially in children with a family history of the disease. Doctors wave of younger teenagers developing type II diabetes – which can lead to heart and kidney disease, high blood pressure, stroke, limb amputations and blindness. People who develop diabetes in adolescence face reduced quality of life and shorter-lived, especially if the disease progresses untreated. It is a scary prospect for our children but in many cases, obesity and diabetes prevention.

Parents should be involved in their children’s daily physical activity. The schools today offer many schools PE (Physical Education) courses that allow kids to engage in physical activity and help them to be more active. They also allow them to interact with their classmates on another level. However, these PE classes is not enough to help with the daily activities of their allowance. Many of these classes have been cut or reduced in recent years due to lack of funding

Physical education should be a priority. after-school extra-curricular activities and sports are also important. Children must develop a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, as well as a balanced diet. Parents need to set limits on the time their children are engaged in passive activities.
