After attending a fitness conference in Orlando, Florida, I keep realizing how much I still have to learn. What an exciting weekend it was! Still, after all the seminars I attended, one presenter said something I did in my head. I wonder if it was true because it gave me really torn emotions. He said,
“the current generation of kids may be the first to live longer their parents.”
The reason I was torn this statement was on one hand, I thought, it’s a way to take advantage of new fitness programs for children. On the other hand, however, I thought, it has become really so bad that we now have to send it to the experts to ensure that they are moving and eating right? I mean, growing up, kids were playing soccer, stick ball, jumping rope, etc. on my block every day. You name it, it was being done. On many occasions, my parents would be furious if I were to stay there for too long to play with other friends of mine. Yet everyday, that was what I was looking forward to do as soon as I came home from school and finished my homework. And the summers were even better because we were out all day! As far as food was concerned, if I do eat fast food, it was only on weekends. During the week I would eat what my mother prepared for breakfast and dinner and what the school had for lunch. . A lot of times I was eating as fast as possible so that I can meet friends, go to recess, or play outside
So I did some more research on the statement and here is what I found
- 31.9% of children and adolescents are overweight
- 16.3% of children and adolescents are obese
- Type 2 diabetes has increased 10-fold in the last twenty years
- Over 8 million children with asthma, up 232% over the last forty years
- Cancer kills more children than any other disease
Scientists believe that poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle are responsible for many of these issues. After finding all this out I am even more driven to fight the effects of poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, not just adults but children too!

- Try to get at least 20-30 minutes of activity a day as a family.
- Limit the amount of sugar and processed foods you and your family are taking every day.
