Fat consequences in children


As the world battles with an epidemic that prove difficult to manage and showing signs of becoming a costly affair, are our children getting caught in the cross fire. Adult onset diabetes, weight loss surgery and weight loss medication for children is not exactly what parent had in mind when planning for their descendants.

An article by Kids Health highlights some report showing that as many as 45% of American children newly diagnosed with diabetes have Type 2. One of the main causes is facing obesity in children and adolescents.

type 2 diabetes was officially considered to occur only in adults because the first time the name of adult onset diabetes, as opposed to type 1 diabetes that was called Juvenile Diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to control glucose accordingly. This leads to excessive sweating. Type 2, the body does not respond to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood glucose. The condition is also known as insulin resistance.

Among adults accompanying disease of obesity. 80% of obese individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes. Similar trends seem to be creeping in children and adolescents. And why not, children live a similar lifestyle with his parents. Infact obese and overweight children often found in families had at least one parent is overweight or obese; yet another strong indication that obesty is a lifestyle issue.

Statistics are not only ugly in the United States, Canada child obesity cases are also increasing. In 1978/79 only 3% of children were obese 2-17 years according to the Canadian Community Healthy Survey (CCHS). By 2004, the numbers had nearly tripled to 8%. Overweight doubled from 14% to 29% as reported in The Daily. All of this can be attributed to lifestyle mainly diet and exercises

The UK was the epidemic is rising, weight loss pills and weight loss surgery are suggested for obese children! The National Institute for Health and Clinical studies (NICE) is reported in BBC News that make surgery for physiologically mature children and pills for less.

NICE is the independent organization in London that provides national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health. It’s membership includes the National Institute of Health (NIH UK), healthcare professionals and academicians.

Obesity is a multi-factorial condition that requires a holistic and long-term approach. It is this view of organizations as well as other similar wide impact should really focus on weight loss management. While short-term issues are really pressing, they should not lose sight of the long term. Permanent weight loss solution is recommended in the second rather than the first.
